Two rules of thumb cover most GMAW setups: run 1 amp per 0.001" of material thickness, then size wire feed speed from amperage with a wire-size multiplier. Enter thickness below and get a full starting point in seconds.
For GMAW on steel, a common starting heuristic is approximately 1 amp per 0.001 inch of material thickness. Treat this as a quick reference, not a final setting. As material becomes thicker, joint design, transfer mode, wire size, position, and multipass strategy become increasingly important.

The thickness rule is most useful as a quick GMAW starting reference on lighter material. As plate thickness and joint complexity increase, joint design and process variables become more important than thickness alone.
Wire feed speed in IPM ≈ amperage × multiplier. Thinner wire has less cross-section, so it must run faster to deliver the same deposition rate.

Every machine reads settings slightly differently. Set the calculated values, lay a bead on scrap, and fine-tune only within the applicable WPS, consumable data, and machine guidance.
Thin sheet requires lower-energy settings and careful heat control. Use wire/manufacturer parameter data rather than extrapolating the thickness rule downward.
Amperage controls penetration and deposition. If the puddle is flat and wide, drop heat. If it's balling up, raise it. The numbers get you in the room — the weld tells you the rest.
