Every process sizes its amperage differently — wire diameter drives GMAW and FCAW, electrode diameter drives SMAW, and tungsten diameter drives GTAW. Here are the working ranges for all five mainstream processes, straight off real machines.
The universal starting point: 1 amp per 0.001" of base metal. Fine for spray and root-level GMAW; for SMAW and GTAW dial toward the low-mid of the range.

Spray transfer needs 90%+ argon and 21+ V. Below 100 A you're in short-circuit territory on all wires.

Undersized tungsten ball up and dip. Rule of thumb for TIG on steel: 2-amp-per-thousandth leans hot — these ranges run about 1 amp per 0.001" at the low end.
Amperage on stick is set by electrode diameter and adjusted to the joint. These are the published (AWS A5.x) current ranges for DC+ unless noted.

Drag E6010/E6011 in the groove at the low-mid; push E7018 with a slight drag. If the rod glows red past the flux, you're cooking it — drop 10–15 A.

Self-shielded (T-11) is the wind-proof outdoor workhorse; gas-shielded T-1 deposits faster with cleaner puddle. Both run 75/25 or 100% CO2.

SAW is flat/horizontal only, single or twin wire. Every 100 A over ~400 A demands serious duty-cycle machines — most shop MIGs can't hang here.
